THE ULTIMATE FLEXIBILITY FIX

Optimal Technique Cannot Be Achieved Without Flexibility

Why Flexibility?

If there was one thing I wish I prioritised more as a competitive dancer; it was my flexibility. Now, I don't mean simply being able to do the splits or contort into crazy positions (though even that would have helped!) I mean being able to move myself through larger ranges of motion in places like my hips and ankles, so that my body actually had the capacity to improve; so that I didn't feel like I was fighting with myself when trying to improve my technique and various skills.

Not only that, but having the knowledge I do now about the true causes of 'tightness', I know for a fact I would have been injured less, recovered better, and been able to push myself harder. It's only in hindsight that I truly regret not prioritising this element of my training; it literally puts a ceiling on how far we're able to progress as dancers.

For example: Trying to improve turnout without the necessary flexibiity in our hips? Our posture and knees will be negatively impacted. Having the ability to kick to our heads without bending the back leg or hunching over? Relies on our flexibility!

There are just some parts of our performance that simply rely on this fundamental component. However... When it comes to actually achieving your flexibility goals? I have MUCH to teach you!

The Truth Behind 'Tightness'

We've been conditioned to think, that feeling tight means our muscles are short. Our automatic response will be to 'stretch it out', and sometimes nowadays 'roll it out'.

However

The truth of the matter is, we cannot make our muscles longer! We cannot physically add length to our muscle fibres. What we percieve as our muscles reaching the end of their range, is actually our brain kicking in to prevent further lengthening.!

Therefore

The key to progress? Is to communicate with your brain, NOT your body.

Fix The Cause Not The Effect

If you want to 'fix' something, you need to know what caused the issue in the first place.

When it comes to flexibility? The cause may not be what you think!

Remembering that it is our brains in charge of our flexibility; rather than thinking about physically forcing ourselves into an increased range, we must instead ask the question;

"Why does my brain not feel safe allowing me to move further?"

The answer, and so the solution, falls into the category of either sensory, neural, or mechanical.

Not until we move through this hierachy, can we target each limitation and develop an efficient and effective strategy for improvement.

INSTANT IMPACT

LONG LASTING RESULTS

Effective and efficient flexibility training takes into account not just the outcome, but the reasons behind restriction in the first place. Believe me when I say, there is more than meets the eye! When you follow The Flexibility Solution in it's entirety, you will cover every underlying aspect, and develop your own custom strategy to re-pattern your brain and push past your limitations.

  • Learn why feeling tight doesn't mean you have 'short' muscles
  • Understand why traditional stretching methods are not enough for dramatic change
  • Discover the impact of mental perception on your strength, stability and range of movement
  • Unlock your full physcial capability by ensuring your brain is helping not hindering you
  • Harness the power that comes with being able to fully utilise a strong and supple body

Accelerate Your Improvement

The full power of The Flexibility Solution lies in targeting every potential cause of restriction. The best course of action therefore, is to work through the hierarchy in order to cover all bases and ensure optimal results. Once you have gained the insight into how your body works, taking action towards progression will be fast and effective.

Sensory

Our sensory systems are our brain's fundamental source of information.

That is to say, things such as what we see and sense, internally and externally, determine whether our brain is happy to allow us conscious control, or whether it feels as though it needs to kick in to survival mode, and make instinctual decisions for us.

I'm sure you've heard of fight or flight? Well, it has a little something to do with that. If our brain percieves threat, then it will trigger automatic responses to deal with it.

The impact of this being, if there is a lack of information from our sensory systems; we will unconsciously be suffering from physical limitation.

Neural

Our nervous system is a communicative network between brain and body. Messages are sent to and from, relaying information and delivering responses.

Tension or irritation in our nerves and fascia, results in inhibitory messages being triggered, and as a result, restriction occuring.

The issue here is,  regular 'stretching' will not only fail in resolving the issue; it can actually aggravate the symptoms.

Furthermore, the approach to successfully alleviating neural tension is the opposite of what the majority will do; it requires a conversation, not an argument!

Mechanical

Once sensory and neural triggers have been identified, we can get a true gauge as to where mechanical issues lie.

Mechanical referring to our physical structure and movement; strength and stability within musculature and joints.

In order to gain Flexibility in Motion, our brains need to know that we will still be in control, and not at risk of injury, if we're moving in a larger range.

It is in this technique targeted training that we not only gain, but maintain, improvement in flexibility and movement execution.

Turnout and Crossing

Well executed foot placement depends on capacity of movement and stability within the hips. This programme focuses on releasing restriction and strengthening deep muscles, in order to allow full rotation and movement across the body; as well as, maintaining that rotation in extension, whilst still maintaining balance in the torso. Without proper function in this area, dancers become prone to injury, struggle with body control, and find developing athleticism very difficult.

Extension and Backlift

While knowing hamstring flexibility must be present to allow high kicks, areas such as the hip flexors and quadriceps are all too often neglected. As areas very dominant in the movements of Irish Dance, imbalance in their function and integrity is very common. This programme works on lengthening hip flexors and leg extensors, whilst building strength at the end of that range, and the ability to integrate full flexibility into movement, without compensating in posture..

High Toes and Point

Without strong, flexible ankles and feet; not only will dancers struggle with injury and problems further up the chain, but achieving a well formed point and having the ability to dance on the tips of their toes will be impossible. This programme opens up the ankles and feet in order to create the capacity of movement, and strengthens the muscles required to utilise that potential throughout; not only being able to demonstrate excellent technique, but hold balance and generate power whilst dancing at full force.

Unlike any other programme, The Flexibility Solution works from your brain down, to instigate true and significant change. Optimise information to your brain, relieve your neural system of tension, and train your body to release range, activate strength, and harness your body's full potential.

Implementing The Flexibility Solution:

Frequency: When Needed

Duration:  1-3 minutes (once sensory mapping has been completed)

The information our brain gets from our sensory systems, determines how much range we're allowed access to. If there is a lack of information, there will be an increase in restriction, decrease in strength, and/ or presence of pain.

Once sensory limitations are identified and the drills are implemented, effects are immediate.

This programme is absolute gold. It's power won't be believed until experienced first hand!

Perfect For: Growth spurts, Seemingly unfixable issues, Pain with no injury

Individual Value:  $97

Frequency: 4-7 x per week

Duration:  5-15 minutes

Our neural system is a network connecting our body and brain.

In terms of flexibility, what we percieve as muscle tightness can actually be tension in our nerves and fascia, signalling that range should be inhibited. Release of this tension then alleviates the symptoms, and allows for increased movement.

When regularly implemented, these techniques are pivotal in avoiding unnecessary setbacks from tension percieved as injury, and plateaus in flexibility and strength development.

Perfect For: Warm Up, Recovery, Pain relief

Individual Value:  $47

Frequency: 2 - 4 x per week (can be adjusted for integration into other programmes / schedule)

Duration: 30-60 minutes

Because a lot of what we think to be 'tightness', is not actually a muscular issue; once the other components are taken care of, we know we are working from our true mechanical limit.

Using inhibitory techniques to allow muscle lengthening, switching on activation at the very end of that range, and building strength through the movement pattern as a whole, to develop and maintain flexibility in motion.

Once stability is achieved, technical control becomes easy.

Individual Value:  $65
